Oda is the executive producer, character designer, and also the script reviewer of the film. Īccording to Shinji Shimizu, a staff of Toei Animation and producer of One Piece anime, One Piece Film: Red is the only One Piece film that Eiichiro Oda has actively participated the most. After the first announcement of the film in November 2021, Taniguchi said that he wanted to express a One Piece that has never been seen before and that he will show it in One Piece Film: Red. Oda stated that Taniguchi was “the first person to ever animate Luffy”. It was the first animated adaptation of One Piece manga, released before the anime series broadcast and had limited screenings in Japanese theaters.
Gorō Taniguchi has previously directed the 1998 OVA, One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzak!, which was produced by Production I.G. The story begins with a shocking fact when Luffy reveals that she is Red-Haired Shanks' "daughter" and his childhood friend. The film has been number one in box office ranking in Japan for eleven consecutive weeks which only three japanese films had ever do so. Īs of 30 October 2022, the film has grossed over ¥17.7 billion in Japan making it the highest-grossing film of One Piece, the highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan, the 6th highest-grossing anime film of all time in Japan, and the 9th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan. Its world premiere was in Nippon Budokan, Tokyo on July 22, 2022, for the celebration of 25th anniversary of One Piece manga and released theatrically on August 6, 2022, in Japan. It was first announced on November 21, 2021, in commemoration of the One Piece anime episode 1000's release and following the broadcast of the episode, a teaser trailer and poster was released on November 21, 2021. It is the fifteenth feature film of the One Piece film series, based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. One Piece Film: Red is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy action-adventure film directed by Gorō Taniguchi and produced by Toei Animation.
